3-day tramp on Wilkin-Young

The great thing about NZ is how little planning you have to do and still have amazing adventures. As we drove along the West Coast highway, we came upon a little town called Makarora. A five-minute stop at the DOC (ranger station) and we were off with our $1 map and a bit of advice for a multi-day tramp on the Wilkin-Young Circuit.

Fording the river. A little deeper than I was expecting!

Beautiful alpine passes.

A very Peter-Pan style bridge.

Scouting the Youngs River. A few too many sieves!

This track had a good number of bridges when you really needed them.

It's not a NZ track unless you walk through a pasture of sheep on your way up.

Can you spot the trail?

Hiking isn't easy. Straight uphill, again.

We stayed at a very big, new hut. Room for around 20 people, plus a big kitchen with running water (piped in from the stream).

On the edge of the world.

Sweet picture

NZ has amazing alpine passes, perfect for summer trampers with no mountaineering gear.
